Dear Prof. Aslanov,
The year 2011 has been a very exciting and successful year for International Astronautical Federation. I would like to thank you for the trust and support that has made this possible. As you know, our Federation is committed to increase the public awareness and appreciation of space activities worldwide, to act as the international forum for companies and organisations to connect and strengthen their links with the space community, to share their knowledge, and to promote their new innovative products and projects.
In the face of these goals and the turn of the year, we would like to take a look into the future, to what is awaiting you in 2012:
The Global Space Exploration Conference, held between 22-24 May in Washington, D.C., USA. It is the first space exploration summit, organised by the IAF in cooperation with the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Leaders in the field will present results, exchange ideas, debate roadmaps and discuss the future opportunities provided by human and robotic space exploration. The technical programme will present the best of the 600 abstracts received, and technical visits will allow an exciting insight into the US space industry. The registration will open 9 January 2012. For more information, please visit our website at www.glex2012.org.
Our most important and prominent event, the International Astronautical Congress in its 63rd year will be held in the beautiful historic city of Naples, Italy, from 1-5 October. The Call for Papers remains open until 29 February 2012. You can find registration details, exhibition and sponsorship opportunities and further information on our website www.iac2012.org that will be updated regularly throughout the year.
Besides, we are also working on the following enthralling projects and events from which the space community will benefit:
- Space Propulsion 2012, 7 – 10 May, Bordeaux (France): IAF supports the 3rd International Conference on Space Propulsion that will highlight programmatic and technical issues, to promote exchange of views and information in the two main areas of propulsion for spacecraft and for space transportation.
- IAF Nanosat Launch Opportunity Initiative: Acknowledging that nanosatellites are a fantastic educational experience, the Federation has created a committee gathering major space universities with the objective of creating a network of experienced students and newcomers. This initiative aims at providing recurrent flight opportunities for nanosatellite missions built by a consortium of aerospace universities.
- International Meeting of Presidents of Space Universities, 13 March 2012, UNESCO, Paris (France)
From 1 January 2012 the Federation welcomes our new Executive Director, Dr Christian Feichtinger. He will take over from Mr Philippe Willekens who has directed the IAF Secretariat with much success for the last six years and who will return to the European Space Agency for new endeavours.
Everyone at the International Astronautical Federation joins in sending season's greetings and good wishes for the New Year to you and your family.
With warm regards,
Berndt Feuerbacher
President, International Astronautical Federation
